EDUCATIONAL VISIT OF 3rd BAMS STUDENTS TO THUMBE DAM, DKMUL & WATER TREATMENT PLANT ORGANISED BY DEPT. OF SWASTHAVRITTA ON 01.12.2022

Thumbe Dam is the Dam across the river Netravati, was constructed in the year 1993. This is the only source of drinking water for Mangalore city and surrounding areas. To fulfil the increased demand for drinking water, new Dam was constructed in the year 2016. The water is lifted from pump which is known as LLPS (Low Lifting Pump station) and is sent to water treatment plant. The water from reservoir is pumped to the treatment plant by High Lifting Pump Station (HLPS). The following are the major process which has been carried out in treatment plant –

  • Aeration
  • Coagulation/ Flocculation
  • Sedimentation
  • Filtration
  • Disinfection

Alum and lime are used as coagulants to maintain pH value and turbidity of water. Chlorine is added for disinfection. Dosage of lime and alum are controlled in the laboratory.

During the visit officials of Thumbe Dam took the students around the Dam and explained the various details of the Dam. After visiting the Dam we moved onto the Water Treatment Plant. Mr Rajesh, office in charge of treatment plant explained the students about the different treatment procedures. He took the students around the plant and explained the working of each component in treatment process. 

We reached the DKMUL, kulsekar around 12:00PM.  We first visited the training division at DKMUL. Mr Paul briefed us about the company. He explained us the various products that were showcased at the entrance of the facility.

 At first we visited the curd processing unit where we were able to see the automated machines used for packing the curd. There were different quantities of curd being produced in the unit. There was a milk pasteurizing unit where we witnessed a furnace which was a combination of both fire type and water type.

We then visited the milk packaging unit where they explained us about the different grades of milk being produced. Later we were able to see the buttermilk packaging units, then Mr Paul showed us the unit where sweets were being made and packed. It was an air conditioned facility and sweets were packed manually.

We then visited the flavoured milk filling unit. We were then taken to refrigeration unit where we saw the Vapour absorption refrigeration system. Finally we were given Sweet Lassi after the completion of the visit. 

65 students of IIIrd. year BAMS along with three faculties, Dr. U. SanthoshNayak, Dr.Shabina T T, Dr.Archana  SBabu were present for the visit.
